Mitsue Hoshino Textile Exhibition

Hoshino-blue

May 11, 2017 – The Nippon Gallery (at The Nippon Club) will host an exhibition titled “Mitsue Hoshino Textile Exhibition”.

Mitue Hoshino learned a traditional dyeing and weaving technique by Yoshitaka Yanagi, a legendary dyeing and weaving artisan, at Joshibi University of Art and Design. Immediately after the graduation, her work won the prize at National Art exhibition. Since then, she has been engaged in dying and weaving profession for 47 years.

At the exhibition, 79 dyeing and weaving works including 13 kimonos will be exhibited. The kimonos are made of silk thread. She manually dyes the thread in different colors with technique called Kasuri, and finishes the work by weaving the thread by hand using loom.

She hopes that her Kimonos will last for more than one hundred years, so the material of dyeing she uses is mainly consisted of the extensive range of organic plants; bayberry, miscanthus, tinctorius, garcina, cape jasmine, sappanwood, cornflower, etc.  Additionally, she uses chemical dye to add color.

Her works are used in Noh stages, TV commercial and movies with the reputation of bold style. She would like to pass this traditional beauty to the next generation, and hopes her artworks will be loved for a long period of time. Her works have unique color combination with delicate gradation, and they brighten the viewers’ mind and atmosphere.

At the exhibition, works of Italian Bobbin Lace, in which she has also engaged for more than 13 years, will be exhibited.

Please come and enjoy the world of the original textile featuring vivid color and warm texture by Mitsue Hoshino.
