    Ebizo Ichikawa XI
Born in Tokyo on December 6, 1977, he made his first stage appearance at the age of six in 1983 at the Kabukiza Theater in the play, “The Tale of Genji”. In 1985, he was given the name Shinnosuke VII, an honorific name in the Ichikawa lineage of Kabuki actors. After a steady rise in the Kabuki world, he was granted the prestigious name Ebizo XI in May 2004. Some of the unique Kabuki-related activities in 2014 were his innovative collaboration among Kabuki, Noh and opera in Kyoto in April 2014, a one-year anniversary tribute to his father, the late Danjuro XII, in May (where he reenacted some of his father’s famous roles), his self-produced hit ABKAI 2014 in August, and his debut in Singapore in the fall. Ebizo also performs actively in film and television. Notable roles include the legendary warrior “Miyamoto Musashi” in the epic television series Musashi on NHK in 2003, and the tea master “Sen no Rikyu” in Ask This of Rikyu in 2013, for which he received the Japan Academy Award as Best Actor. Ebizo has performed extensively overseas throughout his career. He performed in Paris at the Théâtre national de Chaillot in October 2004 to celebrate his succession to the name Ebizo, and at the Paris Opera in 2007, where he was awarded the French Order of Arts and Letters. His last full-scale Kabuki production overseas was Shochiku Grand Kabuki in London and Rome in 2010.
