Cultural Workshop: My First Japanese Tea Ceremony  

New Class

This workshop of Japanese tea ceremony is targeted at the beginners of Japanese tea ceremony. Those who had learned Japanese tea ceremony before but have been away from it are also very welcome!

In this workshop, you will learn:
1.Basics of how to be a guest in the tearoom
Through hands-on experience with delicious matcha and Japanese traditional sweets, you will
learn the basics of how to drink a bowl of matcha tea, how to eat Japanese traditional sweets,
and how to appreciate tea utensils.

2.Basics of preparing and making matcha.
Through hands-on experience, you will learn basic and important tips for preparing and
making a tasty bowl of matcha. These knowledge and skills will enable you to enjoy matcha
quality time more in your daily life.

3.Substitutes for tea utensils
You don’t have to have all the tea utensils to enjoy the ritualized procedure of making and
serving tea. With what you have and/or what you can purchase easily, you still can enjoy the
essence of making and serving tea. I will share some tips so that you can enjoy
modified/simplified versions of Japanese tea ceremony in your home.

Sosen Onishi
ONISHI Sousen is a certified instructor of Omote-Senke school of Japanese tea ceremony, and she has been practicing tea ceremony for 18 years. Sousen started teaching tea ceremony classes at Nippon Club in 2017, and she has led tea ceremony events for the public and private groups at various venues including Nippon Club. She also has taught undergraduate and graduate courses such as (intercultural) communication, languages, and research methodology in colleges in Japan and USA. She incorporates her academic expertise into her attempt of deepening and expanding students’ understanding of the Japanese culture through tea ceremony.

The registration fee is $50 for non-Nippon Club members, $25 for a Nippon Club member.The registration fee is for the first time only. $15 will be charged as a renewal fee after one year.
